Lanting Mansion
No. 122, Qingqi Village, Lieyu Township, Kinmen County
Completed in 1933
Ho Bao started the construction of the house when he returned home in 1933. The building was completed in 1936, locally called "Lanting Mansion".
Introduction
The layout of the building was designed with traditional "one hall and four side houses" with a stacked house on the left wing. It is with the widest side wing in Kinmen. The layout of "one hall and four side houses with a stacked house on the left wing" is extraordinary in Kinmen.
The building is full of bullet holes with ruined appearance. The recessed entrance of the left side houses was inscribed with "Lanting Mansion". The round windows in the gable of the second floor were decorated with clay lions on the flanks and clay doves on the top.
The first floor and second floor were brick piled with western style molding. Under the molding are the patterns of clay flowers and grasses.
County Designated Historic Sites
Ho Bao was born in Qingqi, Lieyu. When he was young, he ran business in Singapore. He went home and started to construct the house since 1933 and completed it in 1936. It was named "Lanting Mansion" after the famous poem collection preface "Lanting Ji Xu" written by the well-known calligrapher Wang Xi Zhi. Thus the sign of the side wing entrance was inscribed with "Lanting Mansion".
Due to civil war between ROC army and PRC army, the house was used by ROC troops and military polices from 1949 to 1960s and has been a dormitory for the teachers of Shangqi elementary school from 1960s to 1970s. The art of the clay sculptures and scale of the mansion are extraordinary among other western style buildings in Kinmen.
