Lin Xin Ping Western Style House
No. 35, Shanglin Village, Lieyu Township, Kinmen County

Built in 1936
  • The record of the house construction is complete on its surveys, employment, materials and schedule planning, which is a historical evidence of Shanglin people worked abroad. The decorative pattern on the tiles of the facade is extraordinary and brilliant. Artistic value of the bricklayer can be found from the building.

Introduction
  • The five foot way building is with front hall and two side houses. The front hall is in traditional Minnan style with recessed entrance in the middle of the facade.
  • The wall of the side houses was applied with Japanese Majolica tiles. The recessed entrance was designed with exquisite clay triangles, carvings of flying dragon and curled grass on the flanks of the top clay board. The windows on the outwards of the building were all made with artistic lintels. The parapet of the five foot way is as wide as the building, adorned with clay lions, angels, birds and curled grasses. The center of the gable was marked with "Xi He Yan Pai" (means Lin's clan) using mosaic tiles. The front was patterned with poppy flower using four pieces of Majolica tiles, which is exceptional in Kinmen.
  • The outside of the house was painted yellowish due to the special consideration of the artisan at that time.

County Designated Historic Site
  • Mr. Lin Xin Ping was born in Shanglin, Lieyu. With remarkable success in his business, Lin Xin Ping had his nephew Lin Bo Hu wire five thousand silver dollars back to hometown to build the western style house in 1936 (Lin Bo Hu was born in Kinmen, he ran the business with Lin Xin Ping and lived in Singapore from sixteen). He hired a Neiyang artisan Lin and Lieyu local artisans to build the house together. The house was completed in 1937, then later Japanese army occupied Kinmen. The house was not occupied by Japanese army though.
  • The style of the building features regional characteristics, local construction technology and craftsmanship of the era. The poppy flower patterned tiles and the arched stair on the second floor are unprecedented in Kinmen with great reserve value.
