Huangcuo Hong's House
No. 37, Huangcuo Village, Lieyu Township, Kinmen County

Constructed in the late Qing dynasty
  • It is said that the house was built in the late Qing dynasty and early Republic of China. After then Hong Xian Bu added side wings with second story on its back to the house.

Introduction
  • The setting is traditional "one hall and four side houses" with a stacked house on the right wing. The front section of the right wing still follows traditional wing design, only the back section has second floor.
  • The roof is traditional two slope tiled roof with horseback ridge. The inner side house is a traditional brick house while outer side house is with two slope roof. The gable still follows traditional mountain style.
  • The right wing is with ruined appearance and numerous bullet holes. The window railings of the right side were made of wood, which is rarely seen in Kinmen.

County Designated Historic Site
  • Hong Xian Bu ran the business in Indonesia when he was young. With great success on his business, he wired money back to hometown to build the house.
  • When Pacific War began in 1937, Japanese robbed Hong's family of their excess building materials. The house was once a dormitory for ROC troops when the troops retreated to Kinmen in 1949. About 30 troops lived in the house and Hong's family lived in the side houses at that time. Most of the doors were dismantled and used by the troops for military construction. During August 23rd Artillery Battle in 1958, the main house was seriously ruined by gun attacks, the troops were forced to move out of the house and the house was abandoned.
  • The building reflects the tough history of Kinmen people went abroad & returned home in 1930s as well as the special background of Kinmen during the war and the military control period.
  • The building is with extraordinary design. Not to mention that the stair at the middle of the side wing is exceptional, the second story house on the side wing is also rare in Kinmen.
