Intertidal zone of Lieyu coastline

Introduction
  • Due to various geographical factors, the intertidal zone of Lieyu has a variety of ecosystems, including beach, mudflat, rocky shore, river mouth, mangrove and algae reef.
  • More than 300 species of intertidal organisms inhabit in the island, include species that are not distributed in Taiwan, presenting the unique biodiversity of Lieyu.
  • The intertidal organisms are distributed in several layers. In the highest dry reef of splash zone, where the species such as perieinkles and ligia can be seen. In supralittoral zone (the area where the beach and reef shore are swamped by seawater at high water only), there are crabs, sea lettuces, barnacles, snails, chitons, mollusks, algae and limpets. In midlittoral and infralittoral zone, where the layer is submerged by seawater for some time in a day (or exposed to air for some time in a day) are rest with starfishes, shellfishes, algae, sea cucumbers, crabs, brittle stars, mollusks, snails, fishes and shrimps.
 
Attractions
  • Due to environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, PH, light, moisture, substrate, nutrients, pollutants vary greatly and continual wave actions, the intertidal zone of Lieyu has very rich ecological resources.
  • Although intertidal zone is good for people to observe and watch marine life, it is likely to be interfered by human activities.
  • When you explore the beautiful intertidal zone, please check the website of the Central Weather Bureau first. Be sure to arrive at the zone 1-2 hours before low water and make sure that there is no rough wave over the sea. Don't be alone and do not go to the place that is with rough waves. Slippers are not recommended as the rocky shore is very slippery. It is recommended to take a record by camera or mobile phone and do not catch any intertidal creature. Please be careful and have fun!
