Koxinga's Well
Xiatian Village, Lieyu Township, Kinmen County
Introduction
Koxinga's Well was situated in Xiatian village. It is said that Zheng Chenggong led his troops on a landing at Hujingtou, Lieyu. When they arrived at Xiatian, his troops were thirsty and exhausted, but they just couldn't find any water there. Zheng Chenggong therefore pointed his sword toward the ground and had his soldiers to dig a well at the point. After digging the ground for few meters deep, they eventually got a sweet spring to drink.
As Ming Emperor granted Zheng Chenggong the imperial surname "Zhu" and the title of "Koxinga" (Lord of the Imperial Surname), the locals named the well "Koxinga's Well".
Attraction
The current Koxinga's Well is a stone laid octagonal well with 80cm round inner hole built by Chengshi garrisons in 1968. Behind the well, a tablet was inscribed with "Our national hero General Zheng Chenggong led his troops on an arrival in Lieyu in Shunzi era of Qing dynasty. He was preparing to restore the territory of Mainland China and he dug the well for drinking water at the time. The steady spring is clean and tasty. It was named "Koxinga's Well" which implies "to restore the territory and revive our country". Inscribed by Chengshi garrisons, December 22th, 1968”
