Wind Rooster
Stationed at the uphill on the way from Xifang community to Houzhai village in Lieyu
Introduction
"Wind Rooster" is an iconic mascot, guardian god and special religion of the locals, has become a unique cultural scenery in Lieyu.
In old days, the locals were suffering from wind, drought and termite damages. Life was so difficult at that time, the folks needed a powerful deity to protect them. Due to roosters eat termites and have been considered as a holy animal since ancient times, plus the blood of the cockscomb of white rooster can ward off evils, the rooster is thus worshipped by the locals as a powerful deity to protect them.
Dotted at entrances of villages and roofs of houses, the white painted clay rooster is worshipped to ward of evils, beat termite, handle housing misfortune, is also referred to as "White Rooster" by the locals.
Attraction
The most famous White Rooster in Lieyu is stationed at the uphill on the way from Xifang community to Houzhai village. The uphill is actually a wind gap between two mountains. As a road was built across the hill, the locals believed that this ruined Feng Shui of the land and would cause wind damage. Therefore they built sculpture of White Rooster and North Wind Lord to protect Feng Shui and ward off the wind evil.
The reason why the "White Rooster" is also referred to as "Wind Rooster" is because it was selected as a mascot symbol in 3rd Lieyu Township Games in 1999, then it "hitched a ride" from Wind Lion God and was given a new name of "Wind Rooster". By then, Lieyu has become "the hometown of Wind Rooster".
