Geological Tour

【Subjects】

Granite gneiss, Kinmen layer, Lieyu columnar basalt, Lieyu green reef, Lieyu basalt, birds, amphibians, butterflies, dragonflies and plants.

【Content】

The trip focuses on different geological layers of Lieyu, including granite gneiss, Kinmen layer, columnar basalt and dike intrusions in different layers. Another key point is to observe birds at Qingyuan Lake and roam in the footpath with miles of trees.

The birth of Lieyu Island:

About 200 million ~ 251 million years ago (the late Triassic period), Nanling fold experienced a series of tectonic activities including Indosinian movement , Yanshanian movement and Himalayan movement. These activities gave rise to the lift of the tectonic plate and gave birth to Lieyu and Kinmen islands. During Yanshanian movement in 100 million to 200 million years ago, the southeast of Fujian experienced a strong surface faulting and magmatic activity. The hot lava formed a huge granite rock and became the basement of Lieyu. Lieyu and Kinmen, as well as the coastal area of Fujian are actually the same igneous rock. The dating result of the "granite gneiss" basement obtained an age of 139 Ma, while the intrusive "granite" rock showed an age of 101 Ma. The basement rock was covered with sedimentary layers such as "Kinmen layer" and "laterite layer". About 13 million years ago, due to the dynamic movement of tectonic plates, a great volume of basalt lava expelled from the crust, forming a huge igneous rock in the South China Sea. The present-day sedimentary layers were formed after continuous rock erosions and sedimentations. Since 2.58 million years ago (the end of Ice Age), the continuous tectonic movements, weathering, erosions and sedimentations have composed the spectacular coastline and magnificent mountains in Lieyu.
